Risks of laparoscopy for cervical cancer surgery

A new article confirms the risks of laparoscopy for cervical cancer surgery (Sert B & al, Gynecol Oncol 2021). Since Ramirez's publication, the risks of laparoscopy for cervical cancer surgery have been highlighted.

The study published by Sert B & coll confirms these data. they compared, retrospectively, the risk of recurrence and the survival of patients operated by laparotomy or by laparoscopy in an expert center. Their results show that the risk of recurrence is doubled after laparoscopy (compared to laparotomy), with in particular recurrences in the form of carcinomatosis which are only observed after laparoscopy. The same goes for the risk of death, which is doubled or tripled depending on the tumor characteristics. A preoperative conization (which removes the tumor before the operation) would, on the other hand, reduce the risk of recurrence and death after laparoscopy..

These lesions should only be taken care of in teams trained in decision-making and gestures.
